No Heat? We Repair Furnaces and Heat Pumps in Arlington.

Arlington winters are short, but they bite. The Dallas/Fort Worth area averages about 29 nights at or below freezing each winter, mostly between late November and mid-March. When the heat quits on one of those nights, the house cools off fast.

We repair gas furnaces, heat pumps and electric furnaces in homes and light commercial buildings across Arlington. In most homes the heater shares the blower, ductwork and thermostat with the AC, so the same technician can check the whole system.

Call (817) 686-1600 or send a request. We'll ask what the heat is doing and set a time.

Smell Gas or Hear a CO Alarm? Leave First.

If you smell gas (a rotten-egg smell) or a carbon monoxide alarm is going off, don't try to fix it and don't wait for a repair visit.

  1. Get everyone out, including pets.
  2. Don't flip light switches, use the thermostat or start a car in an attached garage.
  3. From outside, call 911 and Atmos Energy's 24-hour emergency line at 866-322-8667.
  4. Stay out until they say it's safe. Then call us to check the furnace.

If you heat with gas, keep a working CO alarm on each level of the home and outside sleeping areas.

Heating Problems We Fix in Arlington

Most heating calls come down to a few problems:

Heat won't turn on. It could be the thermostat, a tripped breaker, the furnace door switch, a failed igniter or a control board fault.

Blowing cold air. On a gas furnace, this often means the burners won't light or stay lit, so the furnace locks itself out. On a heat pump, it may be low on refrigerant or stuck in defrost.

Turns on, then shuts off. Short cycling is often a dirty flame sensor, a clogged filter that makes the furnace overheat, or a blocked vent.

Heat pump covered in ice. A little frost on a cold, damp day is normal, and the defrost cycle clears it. A unit that stays coated in ice needs service.

Emergency or aux heat runs all the time. Your heat pump isn't keeping up, and backup electric heat is doing the work. That shows up on your power bill.

Loud or new noises. A bang when the burners light, squealing from the blower, or rattling from the cabinet or ducts.

Some rooms cold, bills up. A system that runs longer to heat the same house is losing efficiency somewhere.

Furnace, Heat Pump or Electric Heat?

Arlington homes stay warm three main ways, and each one fails differently:

Gas Furnace

Burns natural gas and blows the heat through your ducts. Often in the attic or a hall closet. Common repairs: igniter, flame sensor, inducer motor, pressure switch, control board, blower motor.

Heat Pump

The outdoor unit looks like an AC, and it is one, run in reverse to pull heat from outside air. It has backup electric heat for the coldest days. Common repairs: reversing valve, defrost controls, refrigerant leaks, capacitors, backup heat strips.

Electric Furnace or Heat Strips

Electric heating coils inside the air handler. Common repairs: heating elements, sequencers, relays and breakers.

Not sure which you have? Tell us what's in the attic or closet and what the outdoor unit looks like, and we'll sort it out on the phone.

What Happens When You Call

  1. Call or send a request. Tell us what the heat is doing and we'll set a time.

  2. Diagnosis at your home. The technician checks the thermostat, electrical, airflow and filter, then the burners, igniter, flame sensor and venting on a gas furnace, or the refrigerant, defrost controls and backup heat on a heat pump.

  3. Price before work. You get the price for the repair before any work starts. You decide whether to go ahead.

  4. Repair and test. Once it's fixed, the system is run through a full heating cycle to make sure it lights, heats and shuts off properly.

Repair or Replace Your Furnace?

Most heating problems are a repair, not a new system. Igniters, flame sensors and motors wear out, and replacing them costs far less than a new furnace.

Replacement is worth pricing when:

  • The heat exchanger is cracked. A crack can let carbon monoxide into the air you breathe. A furnace with a cracked heat exchanger is normally shut off until it's fixed, and on an older furnace, replacing it usually makes more sense.
  • The furnace is about as old as your AC and both are near the end of their life. Replacing them together keeps the system matched.
  • The repairs keep coming every winter.

The $5,000 rule on our AC repair in Arlington page works for furnaces too. If replacement makes sense, see AC installation and replacement for full system changeouts.

Get Ahead of the First Cold Snap

A furnace that sat unused all summer is most likely to have trouble on the first cold night. A fall check covers the igniter, flame sensor, burners, venting and filter before you need the heat. See our AC maintenance and tune-ups page for seasonal service.

Heating Repair FAQs

How much does furnace repair cost in Arlington, TX?

It depends on what failed. A flame sensor cleaning or a new igniter is at the low end. An inducer motor, control board or blower motor costs more. A cracked heat exchanger usually leads to a replacement conversation. You'll get the full repair price before any work starts.

Why is my furnace blowing cold air?

First check that the thermostat is set to heat and the fan is on "auto," not "on." Replace a dirty filter. If the air is still cold, the burners may not be lighting, often because of a failed igniter or a dirty flame sensor. After a few failed tries, the furnace locks itself out. That needs a technician.

Why does my heat pump blow air that feels cool?

Heat pump air is warm, not hot like a gas furnace, so it can feel cool on your hand even when it's working. If the house isn't reaching the thermostat setting, or the backup heat runs all the time, the heat pump may be low on refrigerant or have a defrost problem.

Is it normal for my heat pump to steam or frost over?

Yes, in cold, damp weather. The heat pump runs a defrost cycle every so often, and you may see steam rise from the outdoor unit. If the unit stays covered in ice, or the fan won't run, turn it off and call.

What does emergency heat mean on my thermostat?

It turns off the heat pump and heats the house with backup electric heat only. Use it if the outdoor unit is damaged or iced solid, and call for a repair. It costs a lot more to run, so it isn't meant for everyday use.

Is a burning smell normal when I first turn on the heat?

A dusty burning smell for the first few minutes of the season is normal. Dust on the burners or heat strips burns off. A smell like rotten eggs is not normal. Leave the house and call 911 and Atmos Energy. An electrical or plastic burning smell that doesn't go away means turn the system off and call us.

Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm?

If you have a gas furnace, gas water heater or an attached garage, yes. Put one on each level of the home and outside sleeping areas. Test it every month and replace the batteries once a year.

Do you repair car heaters?

No. We repair home and light commercial heating and air conditioning systems only.
